Getting Started
Dos File Handles
Use the FILES= command in the CONFIG.SYS file to set the total number of
file handles that will be available on your system. DOS allows each
active process to use a maximum of 20 file handles. A value of FILES=40
at each machine where PORTFOLIO MANAGER is loaded should be adequate to
ensure the system has access to at least 20 file handles.
Disk Buffers
You can further enhance performance by tuning the BUFFERS command in your
CONFIG.SYS file. The greater the number of buffers you specify, the less
disk I/O is performed.
The most efficient number of buffers to allocate is dependent upon each
individual system. The optimum setting for the BUFFERS command can only
be determined accurately by testing with different values.
In general, the faster the machine, the more buffers you can allocate.
A computer with an 8088 processor (XT machine) usually delivers optimum
performance during random I/O with around 20 DOS buffers. For an 80286
computer (AT machine), BUFFERS=40 is a good starting point for testing.
Computers with 80386 processors can efficiently use higher numbers of
buffers.
See your operating system manual for a more complete description of
the BUFFERS command.
Getting Started (continued...)
Installation
Make a directory on your "C:" drive called "\stock".
The demo version looks for all files on your C: drive.
Type PM to begin".
IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The demo version will only allow 10 entries into each of the two sections.
Upon entry into PORTFOLIO MANAGER , the main menu is displayed (see figure 1).
Selections are made using the function keys F1 thru F10. If you are using
an IBM AT or AT compatible machine, your keys will probably be on top of
the keyboard. If you are using an IBM XT or XT compatible machine, your
keys may be on top or the left side of the keyboard. These function keys
may be labeled as follows, depending upon the keyboard:
F1 or PF1
F2 or PF2
F3 or PF3
F4 or PF4
F5 or PF5
F6 or PF6
F7 or PF7
F8 or PF8
F9 or PF9
F10 or PF10
For the rest of this manual, function keys will be referred to as F1 thru
F10. Anyone with "PF keys" may substitute PF1 thru PF10 where needed.
All fields requiring user input are auto-exit. At the end of the field,
you will automatically exit to the next field. If an entry field is
10 characters long, you will automatically exit that field upon entering
the 10th character, without having to press ─┘ or the enter key.
"Freeware" as mentioned in this manual is considered public domain
software and may be distributed free without charge what so ever.

(FIGURE 1)
Stock/Bond Management System is used for tracking and maintaining a history of stocks
and bonds. This section is used for price and volume history tracking only.
Securities Management System is used for managing and analyzing portfolios. This section
is used for return analysis and transaction recording. The only history maintained is when a
purchase, sale or dividend are added to your portfolio.
If you maintain both sections, you must update them individually, as they are independant
of each other.
Configuration
PORTFOLIO MANAGER must be configured to suit your individual needs, such
as what drives and directories your data files reside, type of monitor
attached (for graphing purposes in Stock/Bond management system), type of
printer you will be using as well as where the page breaks should be (when
to start a new page for reports). Also, if you have the MARKET MAKER
graphing system, you may specify the drive and directory for creating
MARKET MAKER data files for importation (see figure 2).
1. Select F4 Configuration from the main menu.
2. Select the drive that contains the data files. Make your
selection from the drives available in the SYSTEM STATISTICS
area. If you choose an invalid drive, an error tone will sound
and you will be prompted to re-select a valid drive.
3. After selecting a valid drive, a data directory screen will
appear (see figure 3). The selected drive will appear in the
top right corner.
If there are no data paths (directories) created for the selected
drive, the message "No Data Directories Defined For This Drive"
will be displayed.
If data files have been created on the selected drive, a listing
of data paths (directories) will be displayed. The highlight
wand will be placed upon the first selection. You may move the
highlight wand by pressing any of the following keys:
= up one line
= down one line
& = left
' = right
PgUp = previous screen
PgDn = next screen
Del = delete highlighted path
You may have up to two screens per drive designation containing
data paths, this will allow for 63 different data paths per drive.
If you have hard drives C: and D: available, you may have up to
126 different portfolios to select from. There are no limitations
to the number of entries per portfolio, except that you are
limited to size of your drive!
4. To select a data path, highlight the appropriate entry and
press ─┘. The selected data path now appears on the configuration
screen. If you wish to DELETE a data path, move the highlight
wand, highlighting the path to be deleted. Press the delete
key (Del). A verification message appears below the screen.
Enter "Y" to delete the highlighted path, otherwise answer "N"
to cancel the request (see figure 4).
5. Select the type of monitor you are using. This is only important
for on-line graphing within the Stock/Bond Management System.
If you make the incorrect choice, the program may not work properly
or even halt the computer. If you have a color monitor you should
choose either "C" or "E" otherwise choose "M".
Configuration (continued...)
6. If you have the MARKET MAKER system, you may choose to create data
files for import into that system. If you do not have this system,
you may leave the default or change to the same as your data drive,
go to step 8.
7. Select the MARKET MAKER data directory.
8. Select the type of printer you will be using for reports. You may
choose "L" or "D". If you have a laser printer available to you, you
should choose to use it as the reporting is clearer and easier
to read.
9. Select the number of lines per page for page breaking. This number
will determine when to start a new page. If data spills over to a
new page without first printing the header information, the lines
per print page may be too large. Trial and error will determine
what works best for your printer.
10. After all your selections have been made, press F1 to update your
system configuration.

Add Stocks/Bonds Closing Prices to Portfolio Manually
If you do not belong to the PRODIGY service, you will need to enter stock and
bond prices manually (more on the PRODIGY service later).
1. From the main menu, press F1 Enter Stock/Bond Management System.
The stock/bond main menu will appear.
2. Press F1 Add Stocks/Bonds Closing Prices to Portfolio Manually.
The Add Stock/Bond screen will appear (figure 7).
3. Enter the symbol of the security you wish to track. If this is a new
security to be tracked and the symbol is unknown, enter an I.D. that
you are able to remember.
NOTE TO PRODIGY USERS:
You may get the symbol from the PRODIGY service by simply using the
jump word "DOW JONES". Choose "Quote Check" from the list of choices
Tab down to the "company name" field and enter the first part of
the company name or the whole name if you like. A generic search
will display all matching companies that are trading, along with

the stock for history purposes you may enter zero. If you own shares
of this security and have bought more and would like to update the
total number of shares, simply add the total bought to the number
listed in the shares field and enter the new number there.
Example:
Shares of XYZ company purchased: 100
Shares of XYZ company held (from shares field): 2000
Shares held 2000
+ Shares purchased + 100
= Total shares held 2100
Enter the new number, 2100, in the shares field.
6. Enter trade date. Trade date format is MM-DD-CCYY, where
MM is the month (valid values 01 thru 12)
DD is the day (valid values 01 thru 31)
CC is the century (valid values 19+)
YY is the year (valid values 00 thru 99).
Default date is system date.
7. Enter type of security. If security is a stock, type "S",if security is
a bond, type "B". This need be done only upon initial entry.

Add Stocks/Bonds Closing Prices to Portfolio From PRODIGY
Prices may be downloaded from the PRODIGY Service by using a "freeware" program
such as PRN2FILE.COM by Ziff Communications. PRN2FILE.COM is provided on the
system diskette free of charge what so ever. PRN2FILE.COM allows the redirection
of printed output to a file instead of the printer. PORTFOLIO MANAGER is able
to import the prices from PRODIGY this way. This saves time and keystrokes.
To use this function, add the following lines in the beginning of your PRODIGY.BAT
file in the PRODIGY directory:
DEL C:\STOCK\PRODIGY.PRN
PRN2FILE C:\STOCK\PRODIGY.PRN
(assuming you have installed PORTFOLIO MANAGER on drive C:, otherwise replace
with the appropriate drive. An example of PRODIGY.BAT is included on the system
diskette).
Add the following line as the last line of your PRODIGY.BAT file:
PRN2FILE
1. Dial into the PRODIGY service.
2. If you have PRODIGY Quote Track's set up on the service, view them and
tab down to the PRINT function. Press ─┘. Follow instructions on the
screen.*
If you do not have PRODIGY Quote Track's set up on the service, you
may enter the Quote Check section of the DOW JONES section on
PRODIGY.*
3. After exiting the PRODIGY service, sign onto PORTFOLIO MANAGER
(see Starting PORTFOLIO MANAGER).
4. From the main menu, press F1 Enter Stock/Bond Management System.
The stock/bond main menu will appear.
5. Press F2 Add Stocks/Bonds Closing Prices to Portfolio From PRODIGY.
The Add Stock/Bond screen will appear with the prices already filled
in (figure 7). If the security is not found on the system, you will be
prompted to fill in the name of the stock or type of bond.
6. You will be prompted to enter the number of shares. If the number of
shares hasn't changed, simply press ─┘, otherwise enter the new
number.
7. You will be prompted to enter the trade date. The first time through,
the trade date defaults to system date. After that, it will repeat the
last trade date entered.
8. You will be prompted to press F1 to add price or escape (Esc) to abort
(see figure 8).
* Please refer to your PRODIGY manual for details.
Delete Stocks/Bonds From Portfolio
If an incorrect entry has been made into the files or a whole security needs to
be deleted, you may do so by this function.
1. From the main menu, press F1 Enter Stock/Bond Management System.
The stock/bond main menu will appear.
2. Press F3 Delete Stocks/Bonds From Portfolio. The delete screen will
appear (figure 9).
3. Enter the symbol of the security you wish to perform the delete action
upon.
4. The security is retrieved. The security description appears in the
name/type field, along with number of shares in the shares field.
5. The system date appears in the two trade date fields (FROM and TO).
If you wish to delete a single trade date, enter the corresponding
transaction date in the two trade date fields. If you wish to delete
a range, enter the trade date ranges in the FROM and TO trade date
fields. If you wish to delete an entire security, enter the word "ALL"
(without the quotes).
Examples:
To delete an entry with a trade date of July 7, 1990, you would
enter 07-07-1990 in the two trade date fields (figure 10). The
corresponding record will be retrieved and displayed.
To delete a range of entries between trade dates June 18, 1990
thru June 22, 1990, you would enter 06-18-1990 in the first
trade date field and 06-22-1990 in the second trade date field
(figure 11). The latter record will be displayed.
To delete an entire security and it's history, enter "ALL" in the
first trade date field (figure 12). The word "A L L" will appear
in both trade date fields. The latest entry will be displayed.

Add Securities And Closing Prices To Portfolio Manually
In order to track your securities and do return analysis, the security must be added in this
section, separately from the Stock/Bond Management System. This section is only used
upon a buy or sell of shares. You do not update this section just for price.
1. From the main menu, press F2 Enter Securities Management System.
The securities main menu will appear.
2. Press F1 Add Securities And Closing Prices to Portfolio Manually.
The securities display screen will appear (figure 19).
3. If this is a first time addition of a security, the only option
is to add a new security. If you have securities in your portfolio,
the symbol will appear on the screen (figure 19).
4. If you are adding to an existing security, place the highlight
wand over the appropriate symbol and press ─┘.
To add a new security, simply position the highlight wand over the
**NEW** symbol and press ─┘. The security addition screen will
appear (figure 20).
5. If this is a new security, you will be prompted to enter the securities
symbol and description.
6. Enter the trade date. Format is MM-DD-CCYY, where MM is the month
(valid entry is 01 thru 12), DD is the day (valid entry is 01 thru
31), CC is the century (valid entry is 19 +), and YY is the year
(valid entry is 00 thru 99).
7. Enter the number of shares bought or sold. For a sell, you must enter
a leading minus sign (-).
Example: Sold 500 shares of XYZ Co. would be -500.
8. Enter the unit cost. This is what the security cost you. You may, if
you wish, include any commission paid out. This will be reflected in
the calculations on your returns.
9. Enter the market price. This is the closing price for that day.
10 If this is a cash dividend*, enter the per share amount, or the lump
sum amount, which ever is available (see appendix A).
11. Press F1 to add the security detail or escape (Esc) to cancel.

If you wish to delete a security, or a mistake is made entering a transaction,
you may delete the entire security or the transaction in error, from your

will delete the security from the portfolio file if all shares are sold, the
transaction file will still contain the security transactions, including the
sale of the security, and it is always available for review. This isn't the case
in a delete. When you issue a delete, the security or individual transaction is

trade date field and 06-22-1990 in the second trade date field
(figure 22a). The latter record will be displayed.
To delete an entire security and it's history, enter "ALL" in the
